Hello, I'm Stijn
Broad design skillset,
Long history in designing,
Wide interest in the world.
Hi, welcome to my website! On this page, you can read all about my journey as a young designer, and have a look at all kinds of designs from throughout the years.
1999
Utrecht origins
On September 23rd, 1999 I was born in Lunetten, Utrecht, as the youngest of four. I still call Utrecht my home to day, and I'm proud to be a member of the community. I've even designed the packaging for Utrecht-themed beer!
2003
Discovering computers
I started school at Basisschool De Spits in 2003. My favourite pastime was to tinker around on computers, at school and at home. I got pretty good at it, and the teachers even gave me the admin password so I could solve IT issues.
Today, I'm still in contact with the school; I design posters for their yearly Arts and Culture Week.
2006
Scouting
At age 6, I joined Scouting at Salwega. We had a lot of fun every week, and went on a few camps every year.
Today, I'm still a scout, now volunteering to organize these weekly events and camps myself! I've also done some design projects for various groups within Salwega.
2009
Baby steps into design
When I was around ten years old, I started using Paint on the family computer to make wallpapers for my desktop by tracing pictures of cars. I quickly got a taste for it, and within a short while I was downloading free design software to make custom themes for my devices, complete with widgets!
2014
Falling in love with Illustrator
On my 14th birthday, my parents gave me a digital pen and tablet. Because the program I was using back then didn't support it, I downloaded Adobe Illustrator, and taught myself the ropes. I fell in love immediately; the possibilities were endless!
More wallpapers and icons followed, and within the year I was getting commissions to design posters and flyers for high school events in return for free tickets!
2016
I smell business!
From age 16, I started doing commercial gigs. My brother, who was graduating college, connected me to some of his friends who were starting companies. I created logos, house styles and promotional materials for them.
2017
Detour through antiquity
In 2017, I went to study Ancient Cultures at Leiden University. Wait, that's not design related! Let me explain. My favourite subjects in high school were Latin and Greek; I love to learn about other cultures and how they view the world. Following this passion, I studied the Babylonians and learned to read hieroglyphs for a year. I gained a lot of interesting perspectives and knowledge, but I also discovered the joy I had in design was greater than my fascination with the ancients.
2017
Designing for DAC
Starting in 2017 and continuing throughout college, I was part of a student association, DAC. I joined quite a few committees, where I designed magazines and a yearbook, and headed the promotion of their jubilee year events.
I used these projects as an opportunity to teach myself InDesign, and I followed an AfterEffects course to learn how to animate.
2018
User Experience Design
From 2018 - 2022, I studied User Experience Design in The Hague. There, I was taught to understand and design interactive experiences, with a real impact on users. It encompassed the full design process, from research and ideation to prototyping and presenting the finished product. We had the chance to do projects for multiple real clients, during which I learned to work with all kinds of media, use more professional digital design tools, and write basic HTML and Javascript. UXD in The Hague has a strong focus on understanding users, and finding out how to create a meaningful experience that can truly improve their life.
2019
Internship at Lodger
During my UXD studies, I worked as an intern at the marketing department of Lodger, a company designing baby clothes and accessories. There, I created visuals and animations for their social channels, and redesigned parts of their website. In the last few months of my internship, I conceived and created a full marketing campaign.
They primarily worked with Photoshop, which I was okay at, but not great. Lodger's graphic designer, a photoshop veteran, helped me truly master the program.
2020
Going pro
In 2020, I came into contact with Oktay, the owner of Nichefluence, a small marketing agency. His company focused on social media marketing, and I helped him out by designing social media visuals. We quickly built up a very efficient workflow, and after a year he hired me as the company's first employee, doing work next to my UXD studies and my freelance gigs. The following four years, the company evolved as I did, especially after I graduated. Our focus shifted from socials to designing brands, print, and websites. Most of the work you see on this website was made during my time at Nichefluence. Explore it using the buttons below!
2022
Graduation
In 2022, I received my degree in User Experience Design. My graduation project was to create an app for Muscqler, a company selling massage devices.
2023
Industrial UX project
From February to November of 2023, I worked as the UX lead on a project for a major industrial company (I can't say which due to an NDA), next to my job at Nichefluence. During this project, I interviewed factory personnel, gave direction to the development team, and taught myself to use Figma to design software interfaces. I learned a lot about working in a scrum team, and about the UX process in general. I also picked up some industrial IT and IoT knowledge from designing for this niche.
